Hundreds of pro-transgender rights protestors gathered to protest an appearance by commentator Matt Walsh on Wednesday night, some of whom dropped thousands of marbles outside the event in an attempt to trip attendees.

Iowa City community members showed up in droves at the University of Iowa to protest a screening of Walsh's documentary 'What is a Woman?' which was shown to more than 150 people at the Iowa Memorial Union.

The documentary highlights the conservative perspective of sex and gender in the digital age as well as the transgender issue in American society and beyond.

After the screening, Walsh addressed a crowd of more than 500 people in the building's main lounge and spoke about the recent hacking of his phone, twitter account and emails.

One protestor dropped thousands of marbles near one of the building's exits, forcing hundreds of attendees to file through a singular exit and past the group of hundreds of screaming protestors.

The marbles were scattered near several staircases, creating the possibility that protestors might tumble down the stairs if they were to slip.

In addition to the marbles, the protestors shouted for hours. Their screams included chants of 'F**k you Matt Walsh,' 'F**k you fascists,' 'Trans rights are human rights,' and 'Trans men are men.'

At one point, a group of musicians with brass instruments joined in to add musical color to the protest chants.

Those who lined up to attend the screening and the talk afterwards were shouted at as they stood inline to enter the event. Demand to attend the talk was so great that the main lounge hit capacity and hundreds waiting in line were turned away.

The event was hosted by the Young Americans for Freedom chapter at the University of Iowa. Several students organizations protested the event, even creating an online petition to try and shut it down.

John Piaszynski of Young Americans for Freedom said that there have 'been a log of bug cultural issues right now you're seeing coming to the forefront. You're seeing transgender athletes increasingly dominating women's sports. There are a lot of concerns about allowing biological males in female spaces.'

'We think it's important to talk about these issues and have these discussions because obviously, they are affecting a lot of people's lives.

'As long as things remains peaceful, we definitely support everyone's right, whether or not they'll have their voice heard on this issue,' he said.

In a statement, a University of Iowa spokesperson said university administrators had made sure their students were well informed about policies pertaining to free speech on campus and student organizations.

'The university recognizes the tension between maintaining a welcoming environment and an environment where ideas may be freely expressed, even ideas that may be controversial or offensive,' it read.

Walsh spoke at length about transgender and gender identity issues: 'The more fundamental the truth, as fundamental as saying men are men and women are women, the more you are forbidden from uttering it.'

Referencing the recent hacking of his accounts, Walsh told the crowd: 'You can't scare me off. You can’t make me retreat from this because there’s nowhere else to go from here. There are no other hills to defend after this.

'You know, I truly see the fight against gender ideology as the last stand for Western civilization. Because if the sane side loses this - it’s over.'
